The story behind Rigby & Mac

December 02, 2014

In the first of a series of interviews with Seven Boot Lane stockists we asked Dan Rigby, half of the Rigby & Mac team, about how they got started, what their signature style is and what the future holds.

1) What's the history behind the Dulwich Trader store?
The Dulwich Trader was the first shop opened by Penny Tomlinson (my mum) in 1989 to add a touch of the west end to Dulwich.  At first the focus was more on gifts and home but quickly included fashion as soon as the premises next door became available and the shops were knocked through.  The focus was always on providing a unique and inspirational edit of products at a price that was achievable.
2) How would you describe the Rigby & Mac style?
The Rigby & Mac style has evolved over the last 3 years.  Initially Rigby & Mac had three distinct styles to reflect the three different shops in Dulwich - classic / country, quirky/eclectic and vintage/feminine.  The website will be changing slightly in the new year as having three separate styles was a bit confusing to customers.  The style will continue to be an eclectic but cohesive mix incorporating relaxed and sophisticated scandinavian style with fun and quirky elements to provide a unique and individual look.
3) What has changed in the 25+ years of the store?
25 years has seen the dulwich trader evolve from country shabby chic to a sophisticated and fun mix of product and brands.  What has not changed however, is the Manager who continues to offer a wonderful personal styling service to customers and the sense of community around the shop.  It also continues to be a true lifestyle store in terms of its comprehensive product range combined with its aspirational and inspirational style edit.
4) Where do you get your inspiration for store window and in-store displays?
Inspiration comes from many sources, particularly new product and trends that we see in the press, social media and previews of new homeware ranges where we may see wonderful textures and colour combinations that we want to buy into for the coming season.  We are also big fans of Pinterest!
5) What does the future hold for Rigby & Mac?
We are learning every day with Rigby & Mac and will be adding new product, tightening the mix and also expanding in new areas, including a far more comprehensive jewellery offering.  Along with a Rigby & Mac brand revamp early in the new year it will be an exciting year ahead!
